Shriners Hospital for Children, Springfield MA will soon be opening the doors of a new state-of-the art pediatric inpatient acute rehabilitation program; the only one of its kind in Western Massachusetts.

We are repurposing 20 of our 40 beds as an inpatient rehabilitation program starting in early 2018. We plan to seek CARF accreditation within 2 years of opening and are looking for a physiatrist to be the medical director of the program, as well as to initiate a spasticity management program, interface with our motion analysis center, and perhaps some sports medicine as time and interest allows.
Technology plans include partial body weight support walkway and treadmill systems, robotic treadmill technology, and functional electrical stimulation among others. We have an active research program examining function and treatment outcomes for children and adolescents with cerebral palsy.
The Director will provide leadership to develop a spasticity management service for neuromuscular patients, sports health and medicine program, and inpatient rehabilitation program as well as help craft future vision. Responsibilities include oversight and management for clinical, education and research activities related to physical medicine and rehabilitation. Three main service areas include inpatient rehabilitation, day rehabilitation, and outpatient services. Opportunities exist to expand all services to complement the strong foundation already in place.
Shriners Hospitals for Children – Springfield is celebrating its 92nd year serving approximately 10,000 children and adolescents annually from throughout New England and eastern New York. The population served includes a wide range of orthopedic, neuromuscular, and musculoskeletal needs including normal developmental variants, sports injuries, scoliosis, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, limb deficiency, and many others. The Director will be an integral part of the leadership team and report to the hospital’s Chief of Staff. The human management skills necessary to work collaboratively with many other teams including but not limited to anesthesia, operating room, orthopedics, neurology, motion analysis center, and rehabilitation services, will contribute to success of this position.
