NATURE OF WORK: This is advanced technical work pertaining to the investigational and educational activities of Environmental Health. Examples of work includes: Investigating by observing, sampling, testing, and reporting in areas such as: hazardous materials, food protection, treatment and protection of water supplies, lead poisoning prevention, water pollution control, sewage and waste disposal, swimming pool and public bathing area sanitation, shellfish sanitation, air pollution control, insect and rodent control, school and institutional sanitation, accident prevention, public health nuisance control and other factors of the environment that cause or have deleterious effect upon the health and well-being of the public.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in the physical, chemical or biological sciences or public health; and a minimum of 6 years employment with investigation duties in environmental/public health or in lieu thereof a combination of academic training and related employment totaling at least 8 years; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities as stated in the job description, including but not limited to: Thorough knowledge of the methods and techniques in governmental public health, sanitary and pollution regulations. Considerable knowledge of the laws, ordinances, rules and regulations relating to public health, sanitation, and pollution control. Knowledge of public health administration and organization. Ability to interpret and apply laws, ordinances, rules and regulations relating to public health, sanitation and pollution control. Ability to develop a thorough knowledge of the laws, ordinances, rules and regulations relating to public health, sanitation and pollution control.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of valid State of Connecticut driver's license. Possession of a Certificate of Registration for Sanitarians issued by the State of Connecticut, Department of Health Services, or qualification to obtain a Certificate within 6 months from date of employment.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Under 1/3 of the time, incumbents in this class may be exposed to some risk of injury from adverse on site environments such as working near moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold (non-weather) and risk of electrical shock. May be exposed to some discomfort from year round weather conditions. Physical condition commensurate with demands of the job.
