The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), a national organization representing 2,800 local health departments, has an opening for a Marketing and Communications Intern. This position will have an opportunity to work in national-level communications and marketing across public health issue areas.
Under the direction of the Marketing and Communications Specialist, the Marketing and Communications Internship is an unpaid intern opportunity designed for students to obtain relevant volunteer work experience to be competitive for future positions in marketing, communications, or public relations.

NATURE OF INTERNSHIP DUTIES The intern will be responsible for supporting staff in marketing and communications projects. Work duties may include but are not limited to: • Reviewing and editing documents and written materials • Drafting written communications for NACCHO’s digital assets such as its blogs and story bank website • Interviewing NACCHO’s members and summarizing key themes into stories from the field • Writing content for internal and external dissemination (e.g. NACCHO publications, electronic newsletters, press releases, and websites) • Formatting and disseminating electronic newsletters • Identifying opportunities through social media to disseminate NACCHO’s messaging • Drafting tweets and Facebook posts • Monitoring media outlets for breaking news related to NACCHO’s priorities • Developing website content and reviewing draft website content • Identifying and posting relevant web-based resources • Providing basic graphic design support • Supporting monthly communications workgroup meeting calls and recording notes • Researching public health issues • Assisting with the execution of special projects • Other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education: • Current enrollment as a Junior or Senior undergraduate or graduate level student in an accredited college or university; majoring in marketing, communications, journalism, English or related field. • Minimum of 12 completed semester credit hours from an accredited college or university; • Must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 grade point scale or "Pass" on a Pass/Fail system.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA’S) Knowledge • Interest in learning about how a non-profit organization organizes and implements marketing and communications activities to further the organization’s mission • Knowledge of office practices, procedures and equipment • Preferred, not required: Interest in public health practice and policy Skills • Strong interpersonal skills • Strong organizational skills • Strong written and oral communication skills • Strong editing skills • Medium-level computer skills with Microsoft Office, particularly Outlook, Word and Excel • Preferred: Medium-level skills with website editing (WordPress preferred) • Preferred: Medium-level skills with using social media • Preferred: Entry-level skills with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite

WORK DURATION & CONDITIONS • Negotiable and flexible between the hours of 8:00 am and 6:00 pm; at least 20 hours per week. The internship is unpaid. NACCHO will work with intern to facilitate academic credit. • Internship duration and schedule to be mutually determined by supervisor and intern; • Must conform to NACCHO dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety procedures.
