The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), a national organization representing 2,800 local health departments, has an opening for a Research and Evaluation Intern. This position will have an opportunity to work in research and evaluation across public health issue areas including emergency preparedness, food safety, chronic disease prevention, infectious disease prevention, and funding for local health departments.
Salary: Unpaid; NACCHO will work with intern to facilitate academic credit. FLSA Classification: N/A
Hours: Negotiable and flexible between the hours of 8:00 am and 6:00 pm; at least 20 hours per week.
NATURE OF WORK AND ASSOCIATED DUTIES The intern will be responsible for supporting staff in research and evaluation projects. Work duties may include but are not limited to: • Cleaning, analyzing, and synthesizing quantitative and qualitative datasets using Stata and/or Excel • Outreaching to external stakeholders to promote survey research • Updating database of local health department primary contacts • Reviewing and summarizing existing literature related to public health research topics • Reviewing and editing research and/or evaluation reports, documents, and other written materials • Developing and editing PowerPoint presentations • Developing and updating research codebooks • Tracking and summarizing research product dissemination using Google Analytics • Summarizing and developing information for internal and external dissemination (e.g. NACCHO publications, electronic newsletters, and websites) • Drafting messages for external stakeholders
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE • Current enrollment as a Bachelors level student in an accredited college or university with a study focus in public health, social science research, statistics, or related field • Must have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 grade point scale or “Pass” on a Pass/Fail system • Basic familiarity with scientific principles, methods, and processes used to conduct survey research, including survey design; data collection, analysis, and interpretation; and reporting of results • Familiarity with, or interest in, public health research and practice • Familiarity with quantitative and/or qualitative data collection • Familiarity with statistical software (e.g., Stata or SPSS) • Ability to conduct literature reviews and assess quality and relevance of research • Ability to synthesize information for written and oral reporting • Ability to identify and analyze problems, using sound reasoning to arrive at conclusions • Ability to communicate well on the phone and in person • Ability to organize work projects and complete tasks within assigned time frames • Ability to work effectively within teams • Ability to work independently as necessary to achieve high performance • Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy in all aspects of work • Strong organizational skills • Strong written and oral communication skills • Strong problem-solving skills Medium-level computer skills with Microsoft Office, particularly Outlook, Word, and Excel
