| JOB TITLE: Clinical Director Physics LOCATION: Geisinger Medical Center Hospital DEPARTMENT: Radiology WORK SCHEDULE: Days WORK TYPE: Full Time JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Director of physics and in collaboration with the Chief Dosimetrist and Operations manager, co-ordinate the daily clinical physics coverage across Geisinger Health System Radiation Oncology. Reports directly to the Director of Physics Assist the Director of physics with regulatory compliance and equipment selection in radiation oncology throughout Geisinger Health System. Review and update clinical physics policies and works collaboratively with residency program directors. The clinical director will serve as an active member of the Radiation Safety Committee. Provides clinical physics guidance to staff, attend departmental meetings and participate in scholarly activities at the department, regional and national level. Performs calibration, treatment planning, maintains equipment and regulatory records, and perform chart check and equipment audit. Meets periodically with Physics Director to support the goals and objectives of the radiation oncology department. COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS: * Participation/Leadership: a. Works with Director of Physics to develop, revise and audit all department policies and operational procedures. b. Travels to radiation oncology sites as necessary to provide clinical coverage and review physics records. * Strategic Planning/Implementation: a. Collaborate with the Physics Director in the development and implementation of strategic, tactical and clinical physics plans and operational efficiency plans.. *Clinical responsibility: * Actively participate in the teaching and mentoring of physician and physics residents *Active member of the radiation safety committee and provides quarterly reports to the committee. *Assists with coordination of equipment usage, selection and replacement as required. *Review and updates physics/dosimetry policies and procedures as required. *Bills for services rendered. *Consults with the radiation oncologists on the physical and radiobiological aspects of the patients' treatments and the development of treatment plans. *Acquires and stores data for treatment plans. *Calculates dose distributions and machine settings for patient treatments. * Assures the accuracy of treatment units and simulator parameters and settings used for patient treatments. *Verifies the correct transfer of parameters between the simulator, treatment plan, and treatment unit; periodically reviews each patient's chart for accuracy and compliance with the radiation oncologist's prescription. * Performs in vivo measurement to verify the dose delivered to the patient when requested by the radiation oncologist. *Calibrates sources and maintains all information necessary for their appropriate use. *Maintains all instrumentation required for calibration of sources. Measurement of radiation and calculation of doses. *Assists in the development of techniques to improve the delivery of radiation treatment. *Participates at chart rounds and other patient discussion conferences as required by the radiation oncologist. *Provides continuing education to the Radiation Oncology staff. *Helps to develop and maintain a quality assurance program for all treatment modalities, localization procedures, and computational equipment and programs to assure that patients receive prescribed doses and dose distribution with an acceptable degree of accuracy. * Participates in development and assists with administration of a radiation safety program as required by the Radiation Safety Officer including compliance with all regulating and certifying agencies (e.g., the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and appropriate state and local agencies). *Monitors a personnel radiation monitoring program for Radiation Oncology as required. * Prepares calculation and verifies shielding required for new or renovated treatment rooms. *Provides performance specification, acceptance testing, and commissioning of new equipment. *Develops and promotes interpersonal relations to enhance the achievement of departmental goals. * Follows established departmental policies and procedures. * Assist the Director of physics in resource allocation planning for equipment usage, selection, and replacement. *Develops techniques to improve the delivery of radiation treatments. *Maintains equipment and regulatory records, and ensures compliance with state and federal regulatory agencies. *Demonstrates leadership qualities including: a. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Requires 5 years’ experience in radiation therapy physics as well as regulatory and accrediting agencies. PhD in Medical Physics or an applied Radiological field of study required and at least 3 years prior management experience leading a physics department. Certified by the American Board of Radiology or the American Board of Medical Physics in Therapeutic Radiological Physics and maintenance of certification.
