Berkeley Search Consultants has been retained by one of California’s most prominent and populous counties to conduct a search for a Public Health Laboratory Director. Located in Southern California amongst rivers, mountain peaks, deserts and fertile valleys, the County offers scenic diversity few locations can match. With a staff of 700, the public health department works to create healthy communities, promote healthy behaviors, and connect and invest in people.
The public health department is looking for a confident but humble servant leader who can lead, direct, and grow the new lab expansion. The position requires a visionary and business savvy leader with a “can-do” attitude to meet the challenges of growing the lab into a leader in the community and the state. The director will have a voice in the new laboratory direction, as well as support and access to county leadership, not often found in other counties.
Under the direction of the Deputy Director of Public Health, the Public Health Laboratory Director is responsible for the overall administration, supervision, coordination, and management of the County’s Public Health Laboratory. Essential Duties include:
Direction of the operations and administration and implementation of Public Health Laboratory objectives, policies, and procedures to ensure effective and efficient services and compliance with established standards, rules, and regulations.
Plan, organize, direct, and evaluate the work of laboratory staff of all laboratory sections including Bacteriology/Parasitology, Mycobacteriology, Virology, and Immunology.
Establish and maintain a sound working relationship with federal and state agencies concerned with diagnosis, control, and prevention of communicable diseases and other illnesses of public health concern.
Direct the development and preparation of grant/contract applications and progress reports and monitors and controls expenditures.
Consult with physicians' offices to identify the laboratory tests they consider necessary; evaluates requests and determines if and how necessary procedures can be incorporated into the laboratory system. Advise physicians on new, improved, or alternative test procedures which may produce more accurate or reliable results than those requested.
Doctorate degree (PhD) in chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or closely related field; OR a Medical Doctor (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) degree from an accredited medical or osteopathy school.
California Public Health Microbiologist (PHM) certification is required.
4 years of relevant public health laboratory work experience in a CLIA certified (by a federal Health and Human Services Agency), or accredited by a CLIA deemed organization as a high complexity clinical or public health laboratory;
2 years of supervisory experience in a public health laboratory. Supervisory experience must have included directing subordinate microbiologist on the technical and administrative activities of clinical or public health laboratories.
Board certification by a federal Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments CLIA) approved program, including the American Board of Bioanalysis (ABB) Public Health Microbiology certification or the American Board of Medical Microbiology (ABMM) certification.
