Position Description: Government Affairs Internship

The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), a national organization representing 3,000 local health departments has an opening for a Government Affairs Intern. This position will have an opportunity to work in policy and communications across public health issue areas including emergency preparedness, food safety, chronic disease prevention, infectious disease prevention and funding for local health departments.

Hours:

Negotiable and flexible between the hours of 8:00 am and 6:00 pm; at least 20 hours per week. The internship is unpaid. NACCHO will work with intern to facilitate academic credit. This internship is currently remote until NACCHO offices are re-opened.

Nature of Work and Associated Work Duties:

The intern will be responsible for supporting staff in government affairs projects. Work duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Reviewing and editing documents and written materials
  • Drafting letters, testimony and other communications to Members of Congress
  • Attending and reporting on Congressional briefings and hearings
  • Identifying and posting relevant web-based resources
  • Creating and maintaining an online repository of resources
  • Developing and editing PowerPoint presentations
  • Summarizing and developing information for internal and external dissemination (e.g. NACCHO publications, electronic newsletters, and websites)
  • Formatting and disseminating electronic newsletters
  • Drafting messages for external stakeholders
  • Identifying opportunities in social media to disseminate NACCHO’s messaging
  • Drafting tweets and Facebook posts
  • Assisting with updating NACCHO policy statements
  • Updating database of grassroots members and uploading lists via online software
  • Scheduling meetings with Congressional staff
  • Coordinating logistics of webinars, Congressional briefings and other events
  • Conducting Internet research

 

Education/Experience

Master’s student in public health, health education, public policy or related field preferred but not required.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of office practices, procedures and equipment
  • Interest in learning about how a non-profit organization organizes and implements advocacy activities to further the organization’s mission
  • Preferred, not required: Familiarity with public health practice and policy

Ability

  • Ability to synthesize information for written and oral reporting
  • Ability to communicate well on the phone and in person
  • Ability to multitask
  • Ability to organize work projects and complete tasks within assigned time frames
  • Ability to work effectively within teams
  • Ability to work independently as necessary to achieve high performance
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy in all aspects of work

  • Medium-level computer skills with Microsoft Office, particularly Outlook, Word and Excel
