The Registered Nurse working in Inpatient Mental Health will provide a full range of nursing care inclusive of administering medications, providing health education, completing assessments of patients' conditions, and documenting patients' response to treatment and education. The Inpatient Mental Health Unit is an 6-bed entity that provides Holistic care to the veteran population. VA utilizes the Recovery Model and provides recovery oriented care that encompasses staff and patient engagement in treatment planning. Patients experiencing an acute episode of mental health illness, PTSD, and/or substance-use disorder are admitted for treatment. This unit utilizes 24-hour camera surveillance promoting a safe environment. Duties include documenting observations, assessments, and changes in patient's condition; collaborating with health team members to facilitate positive patient care outcomes; providing a full range of nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavior problems; and accountable for meeting and maintaining the qualification standards and functional statements of assigned grade. Our facility is seeking individuals who possess good organizational skills which enable completion of work, a demonstrated ability to assume leadership in a patient centered program, and the ability to establish effective communication with patients, families, visitors and members of the interdisciplinary team. As an RN assigned to the Inpatient Mental Health Unit, the nurse is primarily responsible for applying the nursing process to the care of veteran patients admitted to the VA. This includes, but is not limited to; assuring that appropriate documentation reflects assessment of patient needs, interdisciplinary treatment plans, clinical interventions, and evaluation of patients' responses to treatments. In addition, the nurse delivers fundamental, knowledge-based care to adult and geriatric patients while developing technical competence. The incumbent provides direct nursing care to individual and groups of patients under the guidance and direction of the Unit/ Nurse Manager. The RN will provide care coordination to an assigned population, in collaboration with and as a member of the Mental Health Interdisciplinary team as well as provide coverage to the other mental health areas as needed. Cross coverage to all inpatient units is expected. The RN will demonstrate a therapeutic relationship with the acute and chronic mentally ill patient by focusing attention on the emotional and behavioral concerns through a mutually defined professional relationship. Performs structured clinical assessments and complex, systematic psychiatric assessments, which includes the total health status of the patient. This requires knowledge of medical terminology, diagnostic categories, and ability to perform chart reviews. The incumbent begins the coordination process at the time the patient is identified and works collaboratively with staff within the Mental Health Clinics, as well as staff throughout the VA facility that may also be involved in his/her care. The RN reviews assessments completed by others, and obtains missing information from providers, patients and medical records. The RN will demonstrate leadership in utilizing verbal and behavioral treatment modalities. Will initiate patient and family education to include information about mental illness, medication, benefits and consequences of behaviors, coping strategies, evaluations and assessments and legal treatment modalities. This includes the development of an appropriate treatment plan and/or safety plan for patients, and the ability to communicate that plan to the patient's provider. The RN will provide for self-expression and processing of feelings in a group setting. The RN will demonstrates extensive oral and written communication skills: contacts patients through written correspondence and telephone calls, and conducts follow-up interviews and creates and maintains forms, surveys, instruments, and materials for proper coordination of the different treatment modules available. Work Schedule: Primarily Day Shift. 80 hours per pay period. Alternative tours of duty may be required to support operational needs on an infrequent basis. Financial Disclosure Report: Not required
