Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center is looking for a Lead Medical Technologist in our Path & Lab Department. Facilitates team or unit processes by working in collaboration with team members, priorities. Responsible for all aspects of operation in their area of specialty including preparation and maintenance of records and reports, analysis of testing methodologies, training, instrumentation and compliance. FUNCTIONS: Is responsible for monitoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure acceptable levels of performance. Assures corrective action is initiated when test performance deviates from established performance specifications. Attends vendor training for a complex analytical instrument and is responsible for training employees in its operation. Performs complex maintenance procedures and is consulted; as the in-house expert for troubleshooting problems. Provides oversight for the day-to-day workload by setting the work pace, coordinating work assignments based upon skill level or technical specialization, schedule changes, and solving complex problems to meet tum-around-time and productivity goals. Supervises the clinical training experiences of technical and professional level technologist or technician training programs to fulfill educational and professional requirements (when training programs exist). Recommends updated guidelines and policies for non-routine or complex assignments. Coordinates, under the guidance of the unit supervisor the laboratory competency program. Is responsible for reviewing and recommending procedure manual updates for a specific laboratory function. Prepares for accrediting agency inspections by keeping current with all accrediting agency requirements for CAP, TJC, and AABB, which are directed to the clinical laboratory disciplines of Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Microbiology, Urinalysis, and Specimen Receiving/Accessioning sections as assigned. Assists supervisor in resolving any deficiencies received during inspections. CAP Inspection Team Member or alternate for Clinical Laboratory as assigned. Oversees Proficiency testing for clinical laboratory section as assigned. Performs/oversees new employee orientation, training, and competency assessments prior to final review by supervisor. Monitors and assists with accurate time records for employees utilizing established electronic time keeping system. Attends/presents assigned clinical laboratory section quality assurance report at QA committee monthly meeting and brings concerns/issues from staff from all tours; This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
