The Assistant Head Nurse (Assistant Unit Manager), is a professional Registered Nurse with solid clinical experience and demonstrated skill related to clinical and administrative nursing practice. The incumbent exercises administrative and clinical oversight to ensure optimal healthcare delivery to Veterans receiving care through Veteran Health Indiana. He/she is accountable for writing and adhering to established policies, standards of care, and standards of practice. Duties included but are not limited to: 1. Leads/delegates group activities to solve problems or accomplish a specific task. Serves as a role model in the delivery of comprehensive patient/family care and the resolution of issues. 2. Applies a collaborative team approach in identifying, analyzing and resolving patient flow issues. Promotes continuity of care through collaboration with patients, families and healthcare teams. 3. Applies problem-solving skills leading to resolution of barrier to patient flow. 4.Evaluates staff performance and provides feedback as appropriate 5.lmplemehts an educational plan to meet changing program or service needs for self and others. Maintains knowledge of current techniques, trends and professional issues. 6. Facilitates open ex_change of ideas between ·peers, management, and staff; creatively responds to and evaluates suggestions for improvement. 7. Participates in educational assessment of unit staff and recommends to ICU/Stepdown Stepdown Unit Manager priority of topics for staff development. 8. Supports participation in professional organizations. 9. As directed by the Stepdown Unit Manager,-conducts staff meetings to facilitate communication, disseminate information /lead and promote jnterdisciplinary interaction and problem solving. 10. Provides staff with ongoing feedback related to performance and assists the Stepdown Unit Manager with staff performance appraisals and Individual Development Plans 11. Demonstrates effective conflict resolution/management skills. 12. Creates an atmosphere in which nurses build professional relationships with peers and colleagues in the interdisciplinary team. 13. Provides opportunities for nurses to share knowledge through coaching and mentoring. 14. Establishes/maintains effective collegial relationships between services, within administration and with other leaders in the health care community. 15. Assures compliance with standards and regulations related to clinical practice through data collection, interpretation, and reporting of findings with appropriate recommendations 16. Assures that patients are treated in a professional manner with tact, courtesy, and respect. Work Schedule: Primarily Monday through Friday evening/nights; compressed tour with a weekend rotation.
