This Health Technician (Orthopedics), GS-0640-07, is located within Surgical Service at the Martinsburg VA Medical Center. This position performs direct and indirect patient care services assisting the orthopedic surgeon team, which includes a full-time orthopedic surgeon, a physician assistant and two part time orthopedic surgeons . Duties for the position include but are not limited to: Planning and coordination of Surgical Procedures Participates in the preoperative planning of all Surgical Procedures Coordinate appointments and monitors for completion of preparative outpatient testing, surgical risk assessment evaluations. Conducts preoperative interviews, including collection of health history with each patient Coordinate and schedules with the Red Cross the collection of autologous blood from patients undergoing major surgical procedures Schedules all surgical procedures with the operating room as directed by the orthopedic surgeon. Maintain and coordinate the orthopedic elective surgery scheduling logbook Clinic Administration Triages all charts of patients scheduled for clinic appointments to insure the all xrays, reports, and special procedure reports are available for review Maintain clinic log of consultation received, date patients are seen, and procedures performed in the clinic Compiles monthly report of clinic visits and surgical procedures Maintain all active and inactive medical records Maintain supplies for casts and traction, canes, crutches and walkers, dressings and other equipment necessary to operate the orthopedic clinic Assist with data collection for orthopedic research projects Surgery / Operation Room Assist the orthopedic surgeon on major and minor surgical procedures Assesses, plans, and organizes the surgical suite for patient care. Assist the surgical team in preparation and maintenance of a safe and sterile environment during surgical intervention Prepare highly technical surgical instrumentation Performs activities such as suctioning, holding retractors, cutting sutures and making minor adjustments, or cleaning instrumentation of debris Applies casts and specialized dressings to patients in the operating room as required Perform CPT coding for all orthopedic surgical procedure and enters the data postop in the DHCP surgical Outpatient Orthopedic Clinic Prepare patients and applies all forms of synthetic or plaster casts, both extremity and whole body Provides patient education in avoiding complications of the proper care of casts Provides cast maintenance including making alterations to alleviate pressure points and when necessary changes the cast Fits patients with crutches, canes and other adaptive equipment Assist the physician during surgical procedures and diagnostic examinations in the clinic by positioning, draping and setting out and passing instruments and supplies, applying dressing and giving patient wound care instructions. Irrigates wounds, applies topical medications and changes surgical dressings Removes surgical sutures and reports irregularities to the physician Makes minor repair and adjustments to shoes and braces Assist patients in ambulating following the application or removal of a cast or splint Receives emergency calls from the ward and the emergency room and informs the physician or PA Inpatient Orthopedic Acute Care Makes daily round with the orthopedic team on all inpatients Assists nurses on the orthopedic ward in getting postoperative patients out of bed, in chairs, and ambulation with assistance Sets up overhead frames and applies various forms of traction including balance skeletal traction and bucks traction as ordered by the physician Sets up fracture beds and applies slings, splints, dressings Other duties as assigned Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; Tour of duty will be determined after selection; Tour of duty is subject to change to meet the needs of the service Telework: Not available Virtual: This is not a virtual position.
