This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application. This unit's scope of care includes primarily postoperative surgical and medical patients, pre/post procedural care. Common diagnoses include cancer, peripheral vascular disease, orthopedic, urological disorders, as well as cardiac and other medical conditions. The age of the patient population ranges from adult to geriatrics Common procedures include cardiac caths, liver biopsies, bronchoscopes, angiograms, CT guided biopsies, orthopedic surgery, hysterectomy and podiatry disorders. Assess and monitor the patient closely in order to identify subtle changes in a patient's condition that warrant immediate intervention. Patients admitted tend to be medically stable, requiring competency using the nursing process in providing care for patients with complex nursing care needs. Must be able to interpret, integrate and respond to a wide array of clinical information. Because of the critical nature of patients' conditions, nurses working in these areas are often confronted with dealing with end-of-life issues and sometimes other ethical dilemmas related to withholding, withdrawing or medical futile care. Primary nurse for a defined group of patients for a specified tour of duty. Demonstrates technical and operational knowledge and is able to apply these skills in the clinical setting. Operates specialized therapeutic and life support equipment. Collaborates with physicians and ancillary services, provides patient teaching as appropriate. Analyzes and upgrades patient care through quality improvement activities. The nurse serves as preceptor or charge nurse. Demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others.
