The duties of this position are performed in all areas of the Inpatient Pharmacy Section, Pharmacy Service. The incumbent is a rotating, generalized pharmacy technician, who, under the authority of the Chief, Pharmacy Service, is directly involved in all aspects of the preparation and dispensing of drug orders and prescription items. The duties of the PHARMACY TECHNICIAN in the Pharmacy Service include but not limited to: Performs as a general, all-around assistant to the pharmacist, performing the full range of sub-professional and technical duties required in the assigned section. Processes initial hand written copies or electronically entered medication orders initiated by providers selecting appropriate dose form, dose and quantity of doses to be checked by a pharmacist. Ensures that all doses are appropriately labeled with generic name, dose, expiration date, manufacturer, lot number, barcode, and patient name/ward if applicable. Fills unit dose medication carts daily utilizing VISTA pick lists, Safety Pak filled doses and hand picked doses. Following validation as a technician checker, performs final accuracy check of unit dose medication carts filled by another technician. Identifies problems with the VISTA pick list and notifies a lead tech or pharmacist of the discrepancies. Prepares the daily IV batches for checking by the pharmacist following written and verbal instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for routine products and hazardous materials. Utilizes premixed products and manufactures a wide variety of complicated sterile products such as admixtures, syringes, TPNs and piggybacks. Initials all IV products prepared and provides IV pharmacist with all material and documentation required for final check. Follows all procedures related to preparation, safety and sterility while working in the IV room. Accurately documents all bulk compounding of IVPBs and syringes. Operates and maintains complicated pharmacy equipment such as Safety Pak, IV pumps, Omnicell, universal packaging machine, barcode label and paper printers. Ensures applicable procedures are followed and appropriate documentation is made. Reconstitutes oral suspensions/liquids. Compounds various external non-sterile medications using appropriate procedures, calculations and weight/volume conversions. Maintains stock levels by periodic inventories, submission of requests for needed items receiving, storing, and/or transporting incoming orders, removing outdated or deteriorated items and preparing them for proper disposal. Utilizes knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialty areas. Ensures accuracy and accountability of all reports. Performs automatic replenishment of ward/clinic areas assuring appropriate inventory items and levels are maintained. Fills ward stock orders from clinic areas with appropriate items and amounts. Replenishes crash carts and Anesthesia trays. Documents all required data in VISTA computer software. Restocks pharmacy work areas and carts as required. Uses shortest dated items first when filling orders and stocking areas. Solves problems and makes recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action. Trains and orients new students and technicians to the policies and procedures of Pharmacy Service and Inpatient Pharmacy. Performs monthly ward inspections as assigned and within the appropriate timeframe maintaining stock levels and removing expired or deteriorated drugs. Documents and performs follow-ups on discrepancies. Assists in total quality improvement activities by participating in medical center and service process assessment and action teams and continually seeks to improve services. Performs all the duties of lower graded technicians as required. Maintains statistical records either manually or computerized for all pharmacy dispensing actions.
